The campaign for the collection of batteries was launched on November 15, 2015 at Technopark “Idea”. During the first day participants have collected more than 100 batteries. As noted by the employees of resident companies, the event allows participants to contribute to the conservation of nature. “Besides, it is very convenient: no need to travel to special places of reception of batteries”, - said they.
The batteries will be accepted until 5.00 pm on December 24, 2015 in the department to work with residents of Technopark “Idea”. The company, that will pass the largest number of batteries, will receive a free two-meter Christmas tree.
For reference:
One AA battery, thrown in the trash, pollutes by heavy metals about 20 square meters of land, and in the forest area is the habitat of two trees, two moles, one hedgehog and a few thousand earthworms!
This is because the batteries contain various heavy metals, which even in small quantities can cause harm to human health. This is zinc, manganese, cadmium, nickel, mercury, etc. Therefore, galvanic cells (batteries) belong to the first class of danger. After throwing the batteries corrode (its metal coating is destroyed), and heavy metals get into the soil and groundwater. From groundwater, these metals can get into rivers and lakes or in artesian water used for drinking water supply. One of the most hazardous metals, mercury can enter the human body directly from the water and when eating food prepared from poisoned plants or animals, as this metal tends to accumulate in tissues of living organisms.
Meanwhile, each of us can make a feasible contribution to reducing the harms of old batteries to the environment. For this you can go to the rechargeable batteries – it is much longer. Another measure is to take the old battery in the receiving points (it is hard to find but it still exists).
